Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver dated for 8 years before saying “I do” in 1986. The couple met at the Robert F. Kennedy Tennis Tournament through a mutual friend, the NBC journalist, Tom Brokaw, in August 1977. However, in 2011, the couple decided to part ways, putting an end to their 25 years of marriage. Nevertheless, after more than a decade of their divorce, the Terminator recalled his yesteryears with Maria Shriver and shared several tidbits of how he proposed to the journalist. 

In the Netflix docuseries ‘Arnold’ which unfolds the tale of his adventurous life, Schwarzenegger shared nooks and crannies of his proposal. The second episode of the series, ’Actor’, gives the audience a glimpse of his incredible proposal and grand marriage to the Kennedy Princess. 

Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed to Maria Shriver in his hometown

As per the docuseries, the Terminator actor was very particular about Shriver knowing his roots. So, he took her to his village in Austria and proposed to her for marriage in the middle of the lake. .“In 1985, I took Maria with me to Austria, to Thal, to my home village,” the End of Days star narrated in the show. “It really meant a lot to me that she got to see where I came from and where it all began,” he confessed, reasoning out his decision of taking Shriver to his home in the countryside.

He took her to the lake in the village, Thalersee. But Shriver wouldn’t have expected that she would cherish the next few moments with Arnie for the rest of her life. “And I said to her, ‘The boats are out there. I’ll take you on a little boat ride,’” the Terminator actor recalled. Narrating his beautiful proposal tale to his viewers, the 75-year-old said, “When we were in the middle of the lake, I then pulled out the ring and I proposed to her,” as nature witnessed their love.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was happy with his feat and proudly confessed, “I pulled off the surprise.” Shriver and True Lies star tied the knot next year in a grand ceremony at Hyannis Port church. The author went on to support Schwarzenegger like a rock in all his further endeavors.

The journalist left a note for her husband prior to his political stint

Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on August 6th,2003 to announce his candidature for Governor’s election. But what gave him more courage is his then-wife Shriver’s note.
