Louie Simmons, the father and creator of Westside Barbell, has always been pioneering in the powerlifting and bodybuilding world. He trained world record breakers such as Chuck Vogelpohl, Dave Tate, Matt Wenning, and his first all-time world record holder, the late Matt Dimel. Simmons was known for his innovative training methods. He invented the ‘Conjugate Method,? of training, which became very popular among fitness enthusiasts.

Even after achieving so much success, the late fitness coach was criticized for his training methods by netizens. In a recent video uploaded by the Instagram channel of Westside Barbell, fans get to see the then, 74-year-old icon speak up against the accusations of haters.

The video is captioned, ?Lou discussing the local Columbus, OH athletes he developed over the years.? Simmons is talking about the athletes who he trained over the years and he slams the people who judged his methods. Simmons goes on to say, ?A lot of people criticize me; I have heard is, that I only take good strong guys. I started Kenny Paterson, Chuck Vogelpohl, George Crawford, all these guys…? Then he continues to say that he made all these athletes record-breaking champions, “I made them all turn world record holders.”

Louie also concludes with a logical statement about the system of training and says, ?It doesn?t matter. A system is a system. There is no secret to what we do.? Thus, he maintained a system that was needed to make ordinary bodybuilders into record-breaking bodybuilders.

As per the CrossFit journal, he started powerlifting in late 1969 after returning from the army. He worked with bodybuilders such as Milt McKinney; George Crawford and Vince Anello. Simmons had once asked Vince what helped with his incredible power with deadlifting. Vince replied, ?Everything helps my deadlift.?

This is when Simmons realized the power of the conjugate system. On top of that, George was also the master of squatting and combined regular squats, box squats, old Westside style, rack squats, and good mornings. This conjugate system is a unidirectional loading that was created to enable him to squat more.

Louie saw this and came up with the Westside conjugate system. This combined the Soviet system with special exercises and the Bulgarian system with advanced training for superior lifters. Thus, criticizing a fitness coach with more than 50 years of experience, who also invented a training system, must not have been the ideal decision. What do you think?
