The Runner appeared in a snippet of a podcast interview by Rich Roll dropped on YouTube. The post was titled ‘Advice From A 100-Year-Old| Mike Fremont on The Rich Roll Podcast.‘ The host posed some interesting questions to Fremont. He asked, “What is it like to be a hundred?” Despite being 100, an upbeat and strong Fremont replied, “These believe it or not are the very best years of my life.”
The host further asked, “How are you able to not just run marathons and half marathons in your late 80s and over the course of your 90s but also set world records like what is the secret to longevity here?” The celebrity marathon runner attributed his success to his plant-based diet. He added, “No question in my mind absolutely it is diet that is to determine my existence my continued existence and my beautiful health.”
A terrible medical diagnosis prompted Mike Fremont to adopt veganism as a lifestyle. In 1992, at 69 medical fraternity diagnosed Fremont with colorectal cancer and gave him only three months to live. Instead of opting for chemo, he went on a macrobiotic diet. After two and a half years, his tumor bled. However, on treatment, doctors found that his disease did not spread. Fremont attributes diet to his recovery from cancer. He transitioned from a macrobiotic – vegan- to whole foods plant-based diet at age 70.

Deeply impressed, the interviewer further asked, “So it’s around 60 where you start getting competitive though as I understand is that correct? Fremont wisely responded, “Not really. I don’t think I ever became competitive actually until I was 88 for my age. I’m practically number one, yeah.” Fremont started running soon after recovery. However, he made a foray into competitive sports much later.

The not so ‘competitive marathon runner has 5 titles to his name. He holds the record for the fastest marathon time at ages 80 and 90. He bagged the title of fastest half marathon time at ages 90 and 91. And he is also a US champion for completing the fastest mile at 96 years old.

The Marathon runner is a source of motivation for those with illnesses and those trying to begin their fitness journey. He exemplifies the adage ‘age is just a number’ The world record holder is spreading positivity and warmth with his attitude.
