In the highly acclaimed Netflix documentary ‘Arnold,’ legendary actor and former bodybuilding champion Arnold Schwarzenegger opens up about his remarkable rise to fame. Arnie also shed light on the struggles he faced in the early stages of his film career. In the 1970s, a period marked by the prominence of esteemed actors like Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino, Schwarzenegger tackled the challenge of securing an agent who could recognize his potential.

Despite initial criticism of his acting abilities, the 7x Mr. Olympia defied the odds and transformed himself into a Hollywood icon. With unwavering determination and a keen eye for other opportunities, he paved his way to success while refusing to settle for anything less than stardom.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s early career struggles and harsh criticism

During the initial phase of the Austrian Oak’s film career, he faced severe criticism, which put his ambitions to the test. In the Western Comedy film ‘The Villain,’ co-starring renowned actors Kurt Douglas and Ann Margret, his acting received scathing reviews. One reviewer even compared his facial expressions to a horse in the movie, remarking that “the horse had better facial expressions than Schwarzenegger.” However, instead of feeling defeated, the Terminator took these obstacles in stride and used them as motivation to prove his critics wrong.

 “I was so frustrated, it was very difficult to find an agent.” However, having been taught the value of real estate by his mentor Joe Weider, he made a strategic decision that would prove to be life-changing. Recognizing the potential of the real estate market during a period of high inflation, Schwarzenegger invested in his first apartment building and swiftly became a millionaire before he even took over the movie business. “I became a Millionaire in the ’70s before I ever took over the movie business.” 

Chasing greatness: Schwarzenegger’s determination to become a “Leading Man”

While many actors would have settled for less than leading roles, the former Governor’s unwavering self-belief propelled him forward. Determined to be more than a character actor, he set his sights on becoming a leading man and a star. Although confronted with numerous challenges and amongst actors of varying levels, Schwarzenegger stayed determined, actively chasing greatness. “I did not have to take the bulls**t roles, to be a character actor. What the f**k? I don’t want to be a character actor. I want to be the leading man, I want to be the star.”

In 1976, the Golden Era bodybuilder received the Golden Globe for Best Acting Debut with his role in the comedy Stay Hungry, directed by Bob Rafelson. However, he yearned for greater recognition in mainstream media. The docudrama Pumping Iron (1977) offered him the perfect chance to gain more attention and improve his reputation in the bodybuilding world.

Fast forward five years, and Schwarzenegger starred in his first significant lead role in ‘Conan the Barbarian’. The film’s producers had viewed an early version of ‘Pumping Iron’ and instantly knew he was ideal for the role. A mere two years later, he secured the iconic role that would transform his career – ‘The Terminator.’ Over the following decade, the Hollywood action star continued climbing the ranks of fame with movies such as Commando, Predator, The Running Man, Total Recall, and Terminator 2 – ultimately solidifying his status as a superstar.
