Bodybuilding is among the strength sports involving weightlifting. However, bodybuilders don’t focus on lifting the heaviest weight, unlike sports such as Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. Instead, they lift weight in a specific way to maximize hypertrophy. When it comes to sets and reps, legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, and others recommend a specific rep range to stimulate muscle growth. However, a fitness enthusiast on TikTok took a hilarious jab at Cutler for preaching the ideal rep range for years.

Recently Jay Cutler uploaded a video on TikTok where he reacted to memes about him. “Love seeing what you guys come up with!” he wrote in the caption. While the first clip used a clip of Cutler doing T-Bar rows with the funny caption, the second clip surprised the four-time Mr. Olymipa.

In the second clip, a TikToker impersonated Cutler to make a meme about his eight to twelve reps per set advice. The clip had the caption, POV: Jay Cutler trains a powerlifter. In the video, the TikToker played the role of a powerlifter with a gallon of water in his hand and a weightlifting belt around his waist. The powerlifter asks Cutler how many repetitions he should do.

However, instead Cutler, the fitness enthusiast impersonates the former Mr. Olympia. Surprisingly the TikToker does an impeccable impersonation of the three-time Arnold classic winner as he advises the powerlifter to do eight to twelve reps. “This kid… He sounds just like me,” Cutler said in the video, stunned and amused. The TikToker also repeated Cutler’s advice of focusing on muscle contraction.

The following clip with the title, Jay Cutler catches you doing more than 12 reps starts playing. This time the TikToker gives his hilarious take on what Cutler would say if someone does more than 12 reps. While reacting, the three-time Arnold Classic reiterates his eight to twelve-rep recommendation. But why do bodybuilders stay in this rep range?

Why eight to twelve reps?

Powerlifters and weightlifters usually do not go beyond four to six reps each set. In fact, when attempting their max, they often do one rep or two reps per set. However, bodybuilders need a mix of strength and endurance to break down the muscle for growth. Lifting too heavy will only train strength while lifting too light won’t promote growth.

According to legends like Ronnie Coleman, the eight to twelve reps provide the ideal mix of both. Instead of dropping reps Coleman used to drop weight as the workout session progressed. While The King lifted as heavy as could, he also ensured not to choose a weight with which he couldn’t do eight reps or one with which he could do more than twelve.
