From 1970 to 1975, the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger won six Mr. Olympia titles consecutively. After the sixth triumph, he transitioned to his rapidly expanding movie career, which included major successes such as Conan The Barbarian and The Terminator series. It seemed as if he was pursuing grander opportunities. Nevertheless, in 1980, he astonished fans and fellow contestants by announcing his comeback to the competition just a day before the Mr. Olympia event.

However, Frank Zane, the reigning champion from 1977 to 1979, felt confident about his performance at the event. Recently, the bodybuilding veteran discussed the contentious Olympia on The Menace Podcast with Dennis James, featuring former IFBB pro Dennis James, retired Olympia contender Chris Cormier, and 1989 Mr. Universe Milos Sarcev. During the podcast, he brought up Arnold’s win and the crowd’s disapproval, marked by their booing.

The resounding boos: Audience’s reaction to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s claim

After winning the last three Olympia contests, Frank Zane participated in the 1980 event, displaying remarkable physical fitness. During a discussion about his form, the God of Aesthetics admitted that although not at his peak, his physique showcased impressive definition and exceptional shape. Additionally, he recognized the extraordinary condition of his competitor Mike Mentzer, deeming it possibly the best ever seen on stage.

The competition featured the unexpected return of the Austrian Oak to the bodybuilding world. Despite Zane’s confidence in his form, the Terminator emerged victorious. Yet, as the champ delivered his victory speech onstage, he audaciously proclaimed himself as the greatest bodybuilder of all time. Zane quoted Arnold by saying, “This proves once and for all time that I’m the greatest bodybuilder of all time.” The audience overwhelmingly booed in response to the bold claim, remaining unconvinced by the Hollywood star’s statement. “He got booed off the stage,” Zane added.

The audience’s negative reaction to the 7x Olympia’s proclamation left him “crestfallen.” The disapproval from the crowd was unexpected and undoubtedly impacted him emotionally. The Chemist, recalling the events, remarked on how Schwarzenegger was booed off the stage, which came as a surprise to someone who had already established himself as a legend within the sport.

Zane further talked about how Mike Mentzer and himself were in better shape than Arnie. He exclaimed, “I was in really good shape, I wasn’t the best ever, but I was defined in really good shape. I think Mike Mentzer was in good shape for that may be the best shape ever. Arnold wasn’t, I wouldn’t put him as the winner.”

Legacy of controversy: The lasting effects of Arnold’s 1980 Olympia win

The 1980 Olympia’s controversial nature continued to have an impact long after the event took place. The result and the audience’s reaction caused a disagreement among bodybuilding fans. Some thought Arnold deserved the win, while others felt his conditioning wasn’t good enough for the title. Widespread outrage erupted in fans and competitors alike.

As a result, television networks distanced themselves from the competition; Mentzer retired from competitive bodybuilding after the incident at only 29 years old; new judging rules emerged. Indeed, Arnold’s 1980 victory was more than just controversial — it permanently altered bodybuilding’s trajectory and perception.
