Sleep is one of the most important weapons to have in your arsenal if you are trying to get jacked. Adequate sleep is very important to build and retain muscle mass. However, even more, important than that, sleep is essential for an individual’s well-being and mental health. After achieving great feats in the sport of bodybuilding, 75-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger has a different take on life and general health now. He has now become an advocate of a plant-based diet and has written a book sharing his experiences too, which is titled ‘The New Age of Arnold: The Body You Have to Have.’

In his recent edition of the daily newsletter Pump Club, among various topics, he discussed the importance of good sleep. Schwarzenegger has had a history of heart problems. Going through three heart surgeries over the years, he actively speaks about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, diet, exercise, etc. In the newsletter, he vividly explained the cons of getting inadequate sleep.?

Sleep deficiency or sleeping disorders are getting more common day by day. The current dominance of digital media is impacting our lives more than we can imagine. According to SleepHealth.org, 1 in 3 adults (about 84 million people) do not get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need to protect their health. Talking along the same lines, Schwarzenegger used a tweet provided by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a well-renowned neuroscientist.

The tweet talked about the sleep needs of different individuals. Mentioning the tweet, Arnold explained that there is no one perfect number when it comes to sleep.?“There isn?t a single ?magic number? for sleep because it depends on your goals. If you want to prioritize brain health, a study of 500,000 people suggests 7 hours is what you need,”?disclosed Schwarzenegger.?

“But when you drop below 6 hours per night, that?s when your brain and body give you the middle finger,” said Schwarzenegger. ‘The Austrian Oak’ also mentioned that getting less than 6 hours of sleep can make you unhealthy and obese.?“A lack of sleep will also make you more irritable, susceptible to depression and anxiety, and can increase the likelihood of issues with your heart,”?revealed Arnold.

He concluded by pointing out that the human body is really adaptive. It can handle a lot of stress and pressure. Although an individual shall aim to get proper sleep, occasionally not getting enough sleep won’t mess up the system immediately. “Your body can handle the occasional night of poor sleep ? just ask parents of newborns. But, when in doubt, try to get at least 6 hours every night, and ideally a few hours more.”?

But ever since going through multiple surgeries and being at the age of 75 years, Arnold had to make a few tweaks in his training program to suit his lifestyle and physical needs. However saddening that might be for the ‘Austrian Oak,’ these changes were necessary to ensure proper health and longevity. He has been open about the changes he had to make in his lifestyle because of the surgeries.
