In the Brian Shaw podcast, the Icelandic Strongman became candid about his lowest times post-retirement from Strongman.
The Games of Thrones actor destroyed Eddie Hall’s world record of 1,102 lbs (500 Kg) by deadlifting 1,105 lbs (501 Kg). He retired from the Strongman competitive arena after the event. However, he didn’t give himself a break and plunged into boxing training for a match against his Strongman competitor, Eddie Hall. “I didn’t give my body a break, I went straight from Strongman into Boxing. Was probably not the smartest move,” Hafthor Bjornsson revealed.

After he retired from the Strongman sphere, Hafthor Bjornsson was at boxing training the next day, which resulted in some mental health issues. “I just went into some depression and just like low time for a moment, which is understandable when you put your body through so much, and you don’t give yourself some time to just relax and recover.” But Hafthor Bjornsson’s willpower to defy the odds can’t be questioned.
The Mountain’s resilience in trying times
Hafthor Bjornsson and Eddie Hall’s game in the ring excited not just Strongman fans but also boxing enthusiasts. The Mountain defeated The Beast in a unanimous decision. Despite mental health struggles, Thor managed to pull through one of the historic boxing matches. In April 2023, Bjornsson suffered a pec tear while bench-pressing 556 lbs. While such a major injury takes time to heal, Thor was at the gym lifting weights in a few months.
