“Had to Refit Me…That Was Kinda Strange”: Former Mr. America Comes Clean on Risqué Costume During 1981 Championship

Bodybuilding has had its fair share of hilarious moments throughout its history. One such instance occurred in 1981 at the prestigious Caesar’s Palace competition. The bodybuilding world was in splits when the famous bodybuilder, Rory Leidelmeyer, took the stage bearing a skin colored-speedo. However, almost 50 years later, Rory finally opened up about the reason behind this bold yet unique move. 

The 65-year-old bodybuilding veteran recently grabbed fans’ attention as he shed light on the humorous circumstances surrounding the memorable event. 

Rory Leidelmeyer revealed it was his trainer’s idea

In a recent Instagram video posted by Rory, he shared the story behind his unconventional choice of attire. He revealed that his trainer at that time happened to be a good friend of a renowned fashion designer who specialized in creating costumes and outfits. Rory mentioned that his trainer discussed with the fashion designer the idea of creating distinctive speedos, a Risqué costume, for their upcoming competitions.

The bodybuilding veteran revealed it was the fashion designer and his assistant who came up with the concept of the skin-colored speedo. Rory also shared some comical anecdotes from the process of getting measured for his costume. Being quite naive at the time, he approached the measuring session with enthusiasm but had no idea what was in store for him. “Every time I had to go there, they had to refit me. I thought that was getting kind of strange,” he said in the video.

Rory revealed that the real surprise for him came when he first stepped onto the stage in his skin-colored Speedo. As he appeared before the audience, the initial shock on their faces was evident, as it seemed as if he was completely na*ed at first glance. The veteran bodybuilder couldn’t help but laugh as he recalled the hilarious moment.
