Australian bodybuilding icon Lee Priest was among the few bodybuilders from his country to battle it out with the best of the best at the Mr. Olympia contest. Despite being 5’4″, the NABBA Mr. Universe winner gave mass monsters a run for their money. In fact, the bodybuilder defeated Ronnie ‘The King’ Coleman in 1997, a year before the GOAT won his first Mr. Olympia.

Lee Priest’s incredible success could be attributed to his work ethic and genetics. However, these weren’t the only factors that helped the Australian become a bodybuilding legend. Instead of following conventional wisdom, the outspoken bodybuilder did what he thought would be the best for him. One of the examples of Priest doing things differently came through his recent account of how he used steroids.

Anabolic steroid use in professional bodybuilding is an open secret. Over the years, many legendary bodybuilders have come clean about their steroid use. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed what performance-enhancing drugs he took during his competitive bodybuilding days. Hence, after decades of use, certain dosages have become unofficially standardized in the pro bodybuilding circuits.

However, Lee Priest revealed how he rejected such wisdom in a YouTube video. “What was the best bit of advice that you didn’t listen to?” said the man behind the camera in the video. Priest recounted his steroid use in response. While “experts” told him to take high doses of testosterone, Priest didn’t think he needed to do so much. “1000 milligrams of test? I said f**k off,” said Priest.

“I took 400 and got the same results,” revealed the 51-year-old. This wasn’t the only time he rejected such advice. “People say you got to take growth. I tried it twice. Didn’t like it, never took it again. So when it comes to s*it like that, I’m glad I didn’t listen to the so-called experts,” Priest said in the YouTube short. In fact, the Australian stayed natural for his entire amateur career.

The bodybuilder avoided steroids until turning pro

However, despite conquering the regional and international amateur bodybuilding competitions, the bodybuilder understood he would have to take his physique to the next level to compete with the pros.

Priest was 19 when he hopped on his first PED cycle. “I was 19 the first half of the year I was still natural when you see me later on in the year you can see the 20 pounds difference,” Priest said while appearing on the Bodybuilding & Bollocks podcast. The 51-year-old said he took 200 milligrams of Deca for his first cycle.
