When Ben Affleck was first cast as Batman, it was big news for comic book fans all around. Affleck first played the ‘Caped Crusader’ in Zack Snyder’s 2016 blockbuster ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and he needed to get bigger for that role. The character of Batman has always demanded a bulked-up physique from its actors and Affleck needed someone to train him for it. In came bodybuilding and fitness trainer Magnus Lygdback from Sweden. Besides bulking up Ben Affleck for playing Batman, Lygdback has also trained several Hollywood A-list actors as per their role-specific demands.

Magnus Lygdback has been a fitness trainer for over 20 years now and has worked with countless celebrities from various entertainment fields. From training Harry Styles to Britney Spears to Alexander Skarsgard and many more, Lygdback has been a busy man in the industry.

Why Ben Affleck owes a lot to Magnus Lygdback

When Ben Affleck first heard he was going to don the role of The Dark Knight, that too opposite Henry Cavill as Superman, he immediately knew that he needed to get in shape for it. Cavill had already proved his mettle and physique as Superman in Man of Steel before, and now it was Affleck’e turn. So he got hold of Lygdback and started training under him.

In an old interview, Affleck said, “I worked out for almost a year before this movie started to get into becoming a superhero at my advanced age… It was a lot of protein and not a lot of carbs, you know, but just eat like 4 or 5 times a day and lifting weights for a couple of hours a day”. Eventually, under Lygdback’s supervision, Affleck got into the right shape just in time for the movie to commence.

Magnus Lygback’s first Hollywood client was a fellow Swede, Alexander Skarsgard. He then built his reputation in Tinseltown from there on and in no time earned a whole bunch of clients. Recently, he told Business Insider, “A big part of my success in Hollywood is reputation and networking. I’ve now worked with some of the biggest names in music, from Styles to Spears”.

Magnus Lygback’s full clientele is very long

Britney Spears and Harry Styles are just the tip of the iceberg in Lygdback’s client list in Hollywood. His first high-profile client was the 85-year-old Jane Fonda, who, besides her two Oscar wins, is known for her fitness videos. He soon started training other actors like James McAvoy and Gal Gadot. Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem are two other musicians who train under him. His biggest and most impressive work initially was transforming Alexander Skarsgard into a hunk for ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ in 2014. This caught the attention of many celebrities, Ben Affleck included.

Ben Affleck soon approached Lygdback to train him for Batman, and Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman. Affleck worked with him again for Justice League and as Magnus Lygdback put it nicely to Insider, “My Hollywood career snowballed from there”.
