Zane posted a throwback picture of his jacked and shredded physique, which was leaner than other bodybuilders. He was known to be the best at symmetry and never had a very big or bulky figure. The man who defeated Arnold Schwarzenegger in Mr. Universe opened up about his trial and error with bulking up.

He said in the caption, ?I tried bulking up a few times and it was always a disaster. It was just a loss of about a year because you get back to what you looked like originally.? This line is from the interview he gave at Muscle and Strength. In the same interview, he elaborated on this trial and error. He started bulking up for 1972 Mr. Universe and went up to 210 with huge thighs. However, just five weeks before the contest, he realized that he needed more work on his muscles and dropped 10 pounds, which brought him to 190s, and he won the competition. Zane learned the fact that his muscles did not look so defined after he bulked up. Zane looked more shredded and jacked when he did not bulk up.
For him, seeing his conditioning in photos he took was more important than his body fat analysis. In this way, he had full control over how he looked. Zane learned from his own empirical method that bulking was not going to get him his desired results.
Recently, Zane touched upon the major change in modern bodybuilding, where everybody is now more focused on bulking up.
