Bodybuilding demands a lot of sacrifices from its athletes. Since it is a sport that requires a perfect body with every single muscle prominent and visible, the most significant thing is exercise and diet. Food becomes a part of the whole process, and it is not just for satiating hunger anymore. Chris Bumstead, who has been the reigning champion in Mr. Olympia, Classic Physique, is 14 days out of the competition, and his body already looks massive. However, beneath the Hulk-like structure is just an athlete trying extremely hard to win his fifth title.

During the latest leg workout video that he uploaded on YouTube, Bumstead showed a little snippet of his diet just two weeks before the biggest competition of his life. Since this is the most important time of training, he has cut off all carbs from his diet and always eats simple meals, mostly containing protein. Even when he has pancakes in the morning, they are made with protein supplements.

While eating a simple dish of white rice and chicken breast, he commented on his regular diet nowadays and also his mental stress regarding hunger. However, since he is a veteran bodybuilder and always remains calm, he tries to fight his hunger by making himself busy. Bumstead explained about his food and said, ?Pretty much the same foods I have been eating, just less calories, so I feel like it’s just boring to continuously do that.”

While talking about his last two meals of the day, he says, ?My last two meals don?t have any carbs, so when I go to bed, I am like fu**ing hungry.? As Bumstead had also said before, the last lap of training before the competition is a complete mind game. One has to be mentally determined and strong to overcome regular bodily requirements. Since he remains hungry when he goes to sleep at night, he motivates himself by thinking of the tasty pancakes he is going to eat in the morning. Other than that, Bumstead said, ?The days I have been hungry, so I am trying to keep myself busy.? Ultimately, to win a competition, both physical and mental willpower are most important. Bumstead had also previously said that since he has carbs from his diet, he feels more exhausted as well.

Just like controlling one’s hunger is a mind game, Bumstead also explained that this is another mind game that bodybuilders have to play. During the last lap of training, when the body is the most tired, the bodybuilders cannot leave weightlifting because that will cut down the muscle just before the competition and all the hard work will go to waste.
