Four-time Mr. Olympia winner Jay Cutler was known for his wide back. Earlier, the bodybuilding legend shared three tips that would help aspiring bodybuilders build a sculpted back like his. While he did a lot more than three exercises, the 50-year-old former champion named three basic exercises to get people started on their journey.
In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, a bodybuilder can build their back in two ways. Some exercises focus on the thickness and muscle density, while others work on the width. In his video, Jay Cutler showed movements that would give bodybuilders a balanced back workout, with some emphasis on width.

The “standard pull-up” was the first exercise on the list of the former Mr. Olympia. Cutler recommended bodyweight pull-ups for everyone. However, he also said that advanced or experienced lifters could “strap one weight on,” while doing pull-ups. While the former champion didn’t do weighted pull-ups, he also weighed nearly 300 lbs during his bodybuilding prime.
Second on the list was “One-arm dumbbell rows.” The four-time Mr. Olympia said that one-arm dumbbell rows were his favorite exercise for back development. Cutler advised switching sides and focusing on doing 12 repetitions with challenging weights.
The final exercise the Comeback Kid recommended was pull-overs. “Any kind of pull-over movement,” said the bodybuilding icon. There are dumbbell pull-overs on the beach, cable machines for pull-overs, and other variations. However, the former champion explained that all variations would work.

Cutler said these exercises would be “very beneficial” to develop “those barn door wide lats.” According to Jay Cutler, it’s important to grow a wide back, because the sculpted look will come with time. Cutler’s rival and eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman also had a massive back and did similar exercises.

How Ronnie Coleman built his legendary back
Eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman had one of the most developed backs in bodybuilding history. Coleman worked separately on thickness and width. The King performed deadlifts, barbell rows, t-bar rows, and one-arm dumbbell rows for back thickness.
For width, the Arnold Classic winner did barbell rows, seated cable rows, lever machine pulldowns, and underhanded front pulldowns. The eight-time champion also focused on doing eight to twelve reps for each set. Hence, it’s safe to conclude that elite bodybuilders have more or less the same approach toward back training.
