Jay Cutler shocked the bodybuilding world in 2009. The then-two-time Mr. Olympia had lost his title to Dexter Jackson, just a year earlier. However, the bodybuilding icon returned with a vengeance and dropped the iconic quadstomp. The quadstomp also metaphorically stomped the competition. The 50-year-old has now revealed the exercise that helped him achieve it.
Besides losing the Mr. Olympia title in 2008, Jay Cutler also dealt with a “leg discrepancy,” which forced him to innovate. So, the bodybuilding legend incorporated the inverted leg press into his training routine. “So obviously the legs are going to be inverted. The blood’s going to come down so… I believe it helps a lot,” said the man who defeated Ronnie Coleman.
“I started doing these, ’08 – ’09, somewhere around then,” Cutler said in the YouTube short. While the veteran bodybuilder faced difficulty doing standard leg presses, he had no issue with the inverted variation. The movement also helped him focus on all parts of the upper legs. “This is great for the hamstrings, the glutes, the quads, everything,” said Jay Cutler.

The 50-year-old former champion also chose the exercise because “it takes the pressure off the back,” unlike the standard leg press. After losing the title in 2008, fans and experts thought Cutler was done. Most bodybuilding fans thought the competition would be between veterans Dexter Jackson and Branch Warren and newcomers Phil Heath and Kai Greene.
However, Jay Cutler became the first, and so far only, Olympia champion to avenge his loss. That year, he earned the nickname ‘The Comeback Kid’ and beat his competitor with size and conditioning. The quadstomp highlighted one of Cutler’s best body parts, showing off his feathered quad muscles. Today, he might be using it again for another transformation.
Jay Cutler wants to redo the ‘fit-for’ challenge
In 2023, the man who dethroned Ronnie Coleman decided to transform his physique. So, he undertook the Fit-for-50 challenge. Jay Cutler dialed in his training and diet for 90s days before turning 50. His goal was to get as close to his Olympia-winning physique as possible. The three-time Arnold Classic champion unveiled his look on his 50th birthday, on 3rd August, 2023.

While the Comeback Kid impressed the bodybuilding community, he recently discussed doing the challenge again. During an episode of Jay Walking, the former Mr. Olympia said he was busy traveling during the prep. However, this year, he has more time on his hands and would be able to focus on the challenge even more.
While Jay Cutler didn’t officially announce the Fit-for-51 challenge, it’d be safe to guess that he’ll include the inverted leg press into his routine. What did you think about the inverted leg press? Do you believe Cutler will redo the challenge? Tell us in the comments.
