Dr. Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and ophthalmologist professor at Stanford University. Since he is already in the realm of mental health and science, he gives a lot of importance to physical fitness, which is often linked to neurological health. He is a paragon of applying scientific principles to fitness and bodybuilding.

Dr. Huberman’s meticulously curated “foundational fitness protocol,” a testament to his dedication to fitness for more than two decades. The essence of his physical fitness not only lies in having an aesthetic body but also in a holistic approach to overall health and longevity. He does not restrict exercise only to the gym and expresses the need for outdoor activities as well. He recently uploaded a YouTube video where he walked to the top of a mountain with an extremely heavy rock and that was his cardio.

The video started with Huberman and his crew driving in a car to go near the mountain and start the journey of walking up with rocks that we 72 pounds each. Huberman might be a professor at Stanford University, but his physique is nothing short of a bodybuilding champion.

While taking out the rocks from the car, he stated, “So they’re all 72 lbs.” He also finally had the reality check that they would have to walk with the rock in their hands, and he said, “ One and a half miles with 72 lbs.” His crew member had a supportive comment and replied, “People overthink this exercise stuff, it doesn’t have to be that hard.”

All of the crew members along with Huberman started climbing the mountain while holding the rock in their hands. On the way up there, the doctor started feeling sweaty and decided to open his sweatshirt, which was a difficult job because he was not keeping the rock on the ground to do that. The journey, to the top of the mountain was not easy and finally, he had to even take off his shirt and wrap the rock around his shirt, hoisted it up on his shoulders, and kept on walking.

Finally, all of them successfully reach the top of the mountain, while their hearts and muscles are pumping with all the cardio and they successfully get the rocks on top of the mountain. After the clip of their cardio atop a mountain, the video cut to Dr. Huberman sitting with a mic in his studio and he explained that willpower was all about neurons. He explained, “Quitting is a mental thing, not a physical thing.” Taking a 72-pound rock atop a mountain while holding it and walking needs extreme amounts of willpower, and that according to him comes completely from the nervous system. His method of fitness is not only effective for the body, but it is also effective for the mind, especially the brain. He has had the same fitness routine for the last 30 years which has given him the healthiest lifestyle.

Dr. Huberman’s fitness routine

In a previous appearance at Lex Fridman’s Podcast, he revealed that he lifted weights in varying intensities three days out of the week. The other three days she used to run at varying speeds. According to him draining the body in different intensities stimulates the cognitive ability of the brain.

He also advocates for exercising while stimulating the brain, for example, walking while reading a book. Even Jay Cutler, has a similar opinion to the Stanford doctor and sees that every weightlifting should be done with a surgical mindset so that each contraction is capitalized and concentrated.
