Highlighting the significance of proper body mechanics and preventing injuries, the esteemed athlete conveyed his fondness for using free weights like bars and dumbbells in muscle-building exercises.

In a straightforward interview with Escape Fitness, he shared his concerns regarding the dependence on machines for workouts. According to Lee Haney, machines may have their merits for specific purposes, such as achieving muscle definition and separation, such as the leg extension exercise. However, when it comes to building overall mass, he firmly believes that nothing surpasses the effectiveness of barbells and dumbbells. The retired bodybuilder asserts, “For all mass-building movements, I would either use bars or dumbbells. You can’t get better than those.”

The bodybuilding icon, an advocate of old-school training methods argues that the key reason behind his skepticism lies in the alignment of body mechanics during training. The former IFBB pro warns that if the body mechanics are not properly aligned with the exercise being performed, there is an increased risk of injury.

Recounting a personal experience, he describes an incident while performing the incline chest press on a machine. Despite using relatively light weights, the Olympia champ felt a sudden tweak in his shoulder. “I felt a tweak in my shoulder because the machine was taking me in the direction it wanted to go.”

Haney’s primary concern with machines lies in their inherent limitations. Unlike free weights, which allow for a greater range of motion and offer flexibility in adjusting one’s positioning, machines tend to dictate the path of movement. This limitation can hinder an individual’s ability to make necessary adjustments that suit their body’s unique mechanics.
