She talked exclusively with Nanaimo News Now and spoke about the fitness journey. Since Light is already 63, there was difficulty in finding a proper category for competition. Most people her age did not pursue bodybuilding according to her, and that is where all the difference lies.

?There aren?t a lot of women of my age doing bodybuilding. So a lot of the bodybuilding shows only have categories that go as high as like, everybody over 55 or everybody over 45, so my group had everybody over 55, so that was the group that I won,? she explained.

Patricia not only concentrated on her physical training but also had to go through a mental reshuffle for the competitions. Light needed to convince her mind that it was fine to put on weight when she was bulking up for competitions. Patricia then went from losing 30 lbs to gaining 22 lbs of muscle, when she decided to join a bodybuilding competition in December.

She explained her struggles and triumph during this road to fitness, and said, ?It?s super important for women my age to embrace weight training because it is so good for us, and the myth that we have to get feeble in our old age just isn?t true. We don?t have to be that, and you can build muscle when you?re in your 60s, you can build it post-menopause, and we must. Otherwise, we are going to end up in places we don?t want to be.?

Patricia does not stop at one goal, and now she is focusing on powerlifting as well. This has left her family awestruck. The gran also said that she is planning to take part in a powerlifting competition in 18 months.
