On July 15th, the lifting community was shaken by the news of Justyn Vicky’s untimely demise while performing a squat with an astonishing 450 lbs. Despite the presence of a spotter, the weight proved too much for Vicky, and he tragically lost his life during the ill-fated lift. The incident, however, raised questions, with many pointing fingers at the spotter’s inability to help. However, contrary to this, IFBB Pro Greg Doucette pointed out that it was the man’s ego that killed him and not the spotter’s incompetence.

“Ultimately I don’t like to have to say this but I do believe that this is ego-lifting gone wrong. I preach over and over in videos and on my Instagram to avoid ego lifting in the gym and because of ego lifting, this is the tragic accident that occurred,”?Doucette stated.?

Doucette reveals the safest way to squat

Lifters must understand the importance of setting realistic goals and gradually progress their way up. Doucette pointed out that if Vicky attempted a 400 pounds lift, he could have got it for reps. Attempting one rep max might prove to be useless for bodybuilders, according to Doucette.

“Use safety precautions, have three spotters, or squat within the rack with the safety bars in place…adjusted perhaps one or two inches below where you’re going to squat,”?suggested Doucette.?
