Arnold Schwarzenegger ate a high-protein diet throughout his bodybuilding days and even during his prime as an action hero. However, in 1997, Schwarzenegger had to undergo the first of his three heart surgeries. While many people speculated it was because of his previous steroid use, Schwarzenegger inherited a heart defect from his mother. Later in life, the 76-year-old switched to an 80% vegan diet.

However, the 76-year-old didn’t drastically reduce his protein intake. That’s because the Austrian Oak knows much of the information about protein affecting heart health and shortening life is unfounded. In previous editions of his newsletter, Schwarzenegger has debunked several myths regarding protein. In the latest issue, Arnie dismissed yet another misconception.

In his newsletter, the bodybuilding icon wrote he has already debunked many myths surrounding protein, like kidney issues and lifespan. However, he highlighted new research that found no link between a high-protein diet and diminished heart health.?“A recent study offers more retribution: research suggests that high-protein diets do not increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease,”?wrote Arnie.

The Austrian Oak explained that researchers examined over 200,000 participants, covering multiple years.?“They didn?t find that protein itself was linked to poor cardiovascular health or stroke,”?Schwarzenegger wrote in the latest issue of Arnold’s Pump Club. However, the seven-time Mr. Olympia highlighted another meta-analysis of 32 different studies.

The analysis found that not only did a high-protein diet not cause heart problems, it improved overall health.?“High-protein diets were linked to a lower risk of all-cause mortality,”?the bodybuilding icon wrote. While he did say that participants who ate a plant-based diet showed better results, he told his readers not to obsess over?“any particular dietary tribe.”?However, if you’re wondering how much protein you need, Arnie has you covered.?

Since the 76-year-old has been publishing his newsletter since January, he has discussed many topics, multiple times. In a previous edition of Arnold’s Pump Club, the bodybuilding icon answered one of the most common fitness questions.?“How much protein do you need?”

“The minimum effective dose for protein is approximately ? a gram of protein per pound of your goal body weight,”?he wrote.?However, the seven-time Mr. Olympia also told his readers to pay attention to the protein quality and recommended they have different animal and plant-based lean protein sources.
