Reigning Mr. Olympia Classic Physique champion Chris Bumstead recently appeared on Chris Williamson’s podcast. This is Bumstead’s longest podcast/interview after appearing on a podcast with the Nelk Boys earlier this year. During their conversation, Williamson and the four-time Classic Physique Mr. Olympia discussed various things, from his bodybuilding career to his personal life to workout tips. However, their in-depth discussion also revealed a bizarre decision Bumstead once took.

Chris Bumstead has over 20 million fans on social media. Droves of fitness and bodybuilding enthusiasts consider the champion bodybuilder the epitome of aesthetics. However, Williamson asked the Canadian bodybuilding icon if he tried to change his body through a bizarre method to increase height.

During the interview, Williamson told Bumstead, “I read a story that you bought an inversion table.” He said he came across a rumor that Bumstead used the inversion table to try to increase his height. While inversion tables are used for back pain relief and spinal decompression, Bumstead allegedly used them for a different goal.

Williamson recalled reading that the Classic Physique champ wanted to increase his 6’1 frame by a “quarter inch.” If you’re wondering why, Williamson mentioned reading about Bumstead wanting to increase his weight limit. “You could get an extra 10 pounds weight limit in your category,” said the podcast host.

“I tried,” admitted the four-time classic physique champion. However, unlike the rumor claiming Bumstead bought an inversion table, he paid a chiropractor who owned the equipment. “I went to a chiropractor consistently and they have a machine,” clarified the bodybuilding icon. While Bumstead clarified his height didn’t increase, especially since he would have to gain an entire inch, “I also don’t want to shrink, so I’ve definitely tried a few things,” admitted the bodybuilding champion. While Chris Bumstead didn’t list every method he tried, he did do something that many people try when they are young. “I hang from bars all the time to elongate my spine,” said the 28-year-old. While height depends on genetics and nothing can increase someone’s height after they reach their genetic potential, why does Bumstead obsess over it?

According to the Canadian bodybuilder, “classic physique is just a battle to be taller.” Unlike Open bodybuilding, the Classic Physique category imposes strict weight limits per the competitor’s height. Hence, taller bodybuilders can put on more weight and muscle than those who are shorter. While the height-to-weight ratio makes it a fair contest, every inch means 10 pounds of potential muscle.
