Despite Striking Similarities, Arnold Schwarzenegger Explains His Marital Situation in FUBAR Is Far Off From Real Life: “In the Show, He Doesn’t Consider It Cheating”

Arnold Schwarzenegger made his much-anticipated return to acting with FUBAR on Netflix. Within two days of release, Schwarzenegger’s TV show debut has already captured the No.1 spot on Netflix’s top shows list. In reel life, the 75-year-old plays a CIA agent who leads a double life, resulting in his family falling apart. Arnie’s character in the show cheats on his wife. In real life, Schwarzenegger’s wife divorced him, but the pair remained friends and took care of their daughter. On May 16, The Hollywood Reporter asked Schwarzenegger about this similarity between his FUBAR character and real life.

Arnold Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver in 1986, and the couple raised four children. However, after 25 years, the discovery of a child he had fathered with housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena changed their lives. Shriver immediately filed for divorce in 2011, but it took another decade for the couple to finally make it official. Despite these similarities, the bodybuilding icon revealed a few key differences between himself and his FUBAR character.

It was Schwarzenegger’s”f***up”

During the interview, THR’s James Hibberd asked the Predator actor if the similarity was “deliberately autobiographical?” While the former Mr. Olympia didn’t say if it was deliberate, he did recall that it felt like a documentary. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger is remorseful of what he did, while his FUBAR character wasn’t.

“The difference is, in the show, he doesn’t consider it cheating because [seducing CIA assets] was part of his profession,” Arnie told The Hollywood Reporter. In the show, Schwarzenegger’s character also has plans to reignite his relationship with his wife after retiring from the CIA. However, for Shirver and the 75-year-old, things went beyond repair a decade ago.

“It was my f***up. It was my failure,” he admitted during the interview. Shriver and Schwarzenegger maintain an amicable relationship. The pair come together for their children every so often. However, they’ve moved on. And the 75-year-old has also been in a relationship since 2013.

Schwarzenegger in the interview, further reveals that “Also, in the show, he’s deep down still in love with his wife.” However, in reality, the bodybuilding icon harbors no such feelings. Schwarzenegger considers what he did as the biggest mistake of his life. However, he put it behind him and began dating Heather Milligan in 2013.

While Milligan is 28 years younger than the seven-time Mr. Olympia, it hasn’t been an issue for the two. Milligan, the founder of Elite Ortho Sport, is a physiotherapist who treats professional athletes. Arnie revealed he loves Milligan and is “proud” of her for how successful she is.

Thus despite the striking similarities, Schwarzenegger and his FUBAR character are quite different.
