Nick ‘the Mutant’ Walker’s recent victory at the 2024 New York Pro has sparked much conversation in the bodybuilding community. Despite his impressive performance, not everyone is convinced he’s ready for the Mr. Olympia stage. Legendary bodybuilder Shawn Ray shared his thoughts on Walker’s future.

Recently, Shawn Ray appeared on the Voice of Bodybuilding podcast with Bob Cicherillo. The podcast was posted on YouTube, titled, “BOB WAS WRONG! NICK WALKER wins the ’24 NY PRO! Shawn Ray joins Bob in a review of the NY Pro.” In the podcast, they discussed the recently concluded New York Pro show and what Walker’s status would be at the prestigious Olympia. Ray had some strong opinions about Walker’s physique. Let’s delve deeper into the matter.

Now, amidst discussion, “He will never get my vote. Twice on Sunday, he wouldn’t get my vote,” Ray declared, making it clear he doesn’t see Walker as an Olympia champion. “That doesn’t take away the fact that he’s a blue-collar, hardcore bodybuilder. Nick deserves his day in the sun,” Ray said, acknowledging Walker’s work ethic. But he added, “Is that something I want to be the premier physique that represents what all of bodybuilding is about?”

Ray also questioned the decisiveness of Walker’s New York Pro victory over Martin Fitzwater. “Is Martin Fitzwater that good or is Nick getting a little bit too much hype too soon? That was such a close show,” he observed. Ray emphasized that this narrow win raises questions about how Walker will fare against top competitors like Hadi Choopan, Derek Lunsford, and Samson Dauda at the Olympia.

Walker has garnered a large fan following by quickly climbing the Men’s Open division ranks, with supporters cheering him on during the NY Pro show and confident in his chances of winning the Olympia. However, Ray remains skeptical of his physique and believes he still has room for improvement. Even before the NY Pro Show, the bodybuilding community was divided about Nick Walker’s appearance. Despite gaining size, he stirred debate among the legends.

Is Nick Walker ready to join the all-time greats at the Olympia?

Jay Cutler sees great potential in Walker. Cutler said, “Nick Walker is looking really good… I think he can come to the Olympia and possibly win it this year.” However, not everyone agrees. The eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney believes Walker may not meet the criteria for the coveted title (Mr. Olympia).

Haney stated, “If the requirement for being Mr. Olympia is still the Excalibur of Physiques. Be emphases on IF!!! Nick Walker is not it. Although he is an incredible Professional Bodybuilder.” This debate highlights a key competition aspect: it’s not just about muscle gain. Conditioning and posing are equally important. By mastering these, one can defeat taller and more muscular competitors. This was evident at the Arnold Classic in Ohio, where Hadi Choopan beat Samson Dauda.

Nick Walker’s journey to the Olympia stage is undeniably impressive, but it’s clear that not everyone is convinced he’s ready to join the ranks of the all-time greats just yet. Do you think the debate is valid, or are people being skeptical for no reason at all?
