In a video uploaded on their YouTube channel, Vanity Fair featured Bradley Cooper’s personal trainer for the role, Jason Walsh, who explained the details of Cooper’s training routine and diet during his preparation for the movie. Mike reacted to this video and pointed out the flaws he observed in the training approach, providing an explanation for his perspective. Walsh began by stating that the central exercise in Cooper’s training was an elevated trap bar deadlift. Dr. Israetel explained the downside of choosing this exercise by saying, “worst possible exercise you can do for putting on lots of muscle safely. Why? It trains so much of the body at the same time, that there’s no specific muscle that pushes to its limits and thus elicits a lot of muscle.”

Continuing with the reasoning, he explained,?“By doing only partial reps, at the top end of movement, you’re avoiding entirely the deep painful stretch at the bottom of almost every exercise that causes the most muscle growth.”

This choice of exercise came as a shock to the doctor-turned-YouTuber who concluded by saying, “This is a preposterous choice for this movement…ah this man is paid by Hollywood people.”?

What was Bradley Cooper’s diet for the role??

Continuing with the video, Walsh explained that in order to gain so much weight, Cooper had to rely mostly on liquid calories so that they can be consumed as well as digested quickly. Gradually increasing the calorie intake every week, starting from 2000 and reaching up to 4500 by adding 500 calories per week, was the approach taken. In response to this, Dr. Israetel shared his insights, indicating that the actual bulk for Cooper likely began around week 4, as prior to that, he was merely eating to maintain his weight. He emphasized that consuming more than 3500 calories would have been futile, as it would have primarily led to fat gain rather than promoting lean muscle development.
