Bodybuilding is a sport where entities come forward to construct and portray their magnificent physique in front of the world. In order to do so, more often than not, they choose prestigious contests like Mr. Olympia or Arnold Classic. However, the six consecutive Mr. Olympia Title holder, Dorian Yates, never actually took part in the latter. And recently he finally explained the real reason behind it.
The English bodybuilder, Dorian Yates, garnered a reputation and earned the nickname, The Shadow. Because he shines brightly on the stage with all his achievements and remains elusive off the stage. However, he finally addressed why he never participated in Arnold’s Classic.

Although the Shadow had participated in and won the Mr. Olympia several times, he hadn’t marked his entry in the Arnold Classic. In his recent Instagram post, Yates shares some of his most extraordinary poses. A long message also accompanied the post. He minutely addresses his noncommitment toward the prestigious tournament. He mentions “Arnold Classic winners lost ground by the time they competed for the Olympia as there wasn’t time to improve.“

Yates explains that after Arnold, most bodybuilders lose their construction and do not have another 12 months to work on it for Mr. Olympia. He remarks that for every competition bodybuilders have to lose weight, which contradicts Dorian’s beliefs. Dorian always preferred to grow at a steady pace instead. Thus he pronounces, “I was always only ever interested in one show and that was the Mr. Olympia.”
In one of the photos, he walks towards the light, resembling a lifelike shadow. Within the photo, he writes, “Be the shadow that others follow”. In the caption, however, he explains how he got to receive the title.

The legendary bodybuilding journalist, Peter McGough, had named Dorian “The Shadow”. Yates announces that Peter had been one of his early supporters who had been present even at his first show. Dorian points out, “Peter gave me the name due to my disappearing for long periods of time and then appearing without any fanfare or even telling anyone in the industry which show I was going to do.” He further states firmly that disappearing and then coming back even stronger and bigger than before had become his trademark.

The sport of bodybuilding had several legends who were known more by their nicknames than their legal ones. This phenomenon is not rare at all, as the significance and practicality of the nicknames are well-suited for the audience’s perception of certain entities.
