When it comes to one’s fitness journey, there are several hurdles involved in the process. Where in the one hand, it takes no time to get injured, it takes years of dedication to get back on track. The Northland truck driver’s story of getting back on track and getting back to being fit is a testament to how willpower can take you miles.

Sara Hatherell, a 32-year-old truck driver, had the job of unloading wool bales from the back of trucks at her allocated destinations. She had always been warned about safety concerns, however, accidents do not come announced. In 2019, Hatherell was knocked out because of a simple mistake. As per the Northern Advocate, she somehow forgot to push the wool bale and instead pulled it towards herself, and the entire lot ended up falling backward onto her head, and she fell 2.5 meters onto the concrete.

Sara Hatherell after her accident, suffered from a damaged shoulder, ribs, and neck. But the worst were the effects that followed her head injury. She often faced post-concussion syndrome, fatigue, and constant nerve pain. She said, “When I first had my head injury, I was told don’t do anything, don’t read a book, just rest.”

She was not allowed to do anything. She added, “Then because I wasn’t doing anything for a while, I lost some muscle, and my fitness levels went downhill.” She suffered from numbness in her face and barely had any sense of smell or taste. As a result of sitting around, she gained 30 kg, and it made her depressed.

She added, “I had days where I sat in the shower and cried because my hair was falling out…I couldn’t even wash my own hair. Or a simple task like hanging the washing out was too hard and I needed to rest after.” Because of all the injuries, she could not get back to her regular CrossFit regime.

Hatherell was determined and had to get back to getting fit. Finally, in 2022, she got herself registered in the Aligned Movement fitness studio in Kerikeri. She has been taking pilates classes to develop strength and get back her flexibility. She takes regular chiropractor sessions and is getting better each day.

Her story is a true testament to ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ There are several such strong women in the fitness world whose stories often inspire others.
