Even after giving up training for yoga, the bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates also known as The Shadow never stops reminiscing about his rigorous gym sessions during his prime. He shares the chronicles of his gym workouts with his social media followers and gives a glimpse of what it takes to become a 6x Mr. Olympia champion.

In a recent Instagram post, he posted a clip of his strenuous workout session at a gym in Toronto. But what’s unique about the video is that the legend was surrounded by onlookers during the gym session. He reveals how his regular gym sessions were different from the reel he posted.

Yates in his recent throwback video, was seen performing lat pulldown with heavy weights. The grunts he lets out with every rep in the clip signify the weights he was prepping with. The English bodybuilder was a member of Temple Gym Birmingham. Captioning the post he wrote, “Here’s some rare training footage captured in Toronto!” But this video was a rare case where he was training under the gaze of spectators and camera flashes at the gym.

Describing the timeline of the clip, he adds to the post, “This was taken in The Gym, post Mr. Olympia 1995 where I’d presented arguably my greatest physique, either 93 or 95 was my best I believe.” He said that it was one of the odd occasions where bystanders got a glimpse of him working out.

Mentioning one of the stringent gym rules during his training sessions back in the 1990s, Yates said, ”During my career, when I’d train at Temple Gym, no one was ever allowed to watch me train!

Explaining the reason behind such a bizarre directive he wrote, ”I couldn’t be distracted at all, not by anyone. The weights that we’d be using could cause serious damage so we couldn’t risk any distractions and we were so tunnel vision focused, nothing was allowed to interfere.”

Once in his social media posts, Dorian Yates opened up about the gym that has seen him in sweat and blood for acing the Mr. Olympia stage. The Temple Gym at the core of the UK’s second city harbored the bodybuilding hardcore including Yates who would prep around the year to build up his monster physique for Mr. Olympia.

Year-round, in the freezing winters to the warm(ish) summers I’d be there., 10.30 am, 4x per week ready to smash my goals…said Yates in his post. And clearly, that reflected on the stage of the most elite bodybuilding competition with the Shadow claiming the Mr. Olympia title for 6 times during his professional career.

Instead of spending his retirement days in training sessions, the 60-year-old has chosen to embrace Yoga and meditation as a way of life. After stepping away from the competitive sphere due to serious injuries, Dorian now leads a healthy and fit life by embracing this age-old tradition.
