Dorian Yates, the Mass Monster who dominated the Olympia stage from 1992 to 1997, recently looked back on his 96 Mr. Olympia appearance. Despite winning the competition, Yates expressed disappointment in his physique that year. Consequently, the former IFBB pro turned to social media to talk about his experiences and highlight the obstacles he faced while preparing for the event.

Recognized for his dedication to achieving extreme levels of shredded conditioning, he acknowledged going too far that year. However, through thoughtful examination and adjustments, he was able to fine-tune his physique for later competitions. Although it was difficult to impartially assess his appearance during the event itself, the Shadow eagerly studied the situation afterward to obtain a clearer understanding.

In a recent Instagram post, the 6x Mr. Olympia champion admitted looking too flat on stage. “I could see that I was indeed too flat and I wanted to rectify it for the following week.” As a result, he quickly acted to fix this issue for the upcoming German Grand Prix. He purposefully increased his carb intake, consuming between 1000 and 1200 grams. During this time, the British athlete consistently assessed his body, aiming for the ideal balance of fullness and tightness.

The retired bodybuilding veteran talked about the complex art of competition readiness and how he had to adjust to his body’s unique reactions each year. He followed a regular routine, but his body sometimes reacted differently. “So I had to make adjustments and adapt to the circumstances that arose. That was the beauty though, the journey of crafting a physique that’d be cemented in history!” Using his personal experiences, Yates gave valuable advice to people preparing for contests.

Dorian Yates’ personal advice for contest preparation

Yates stressed the need to pay close attention to one’s body and its unique requirements. This might involve adding more carbs, drinking more water, or changing salt levels. The 61-year-old pointed out the many factors that contribute to bodybuilding contest preparation. By carefully recording his progress and regularly reviewing photos of his body each week, he made the necessary changes to reach his goal.
