24-time Olympia-winning coach Hany Rambod has not just fostered relationships with bodybuilders he has coached but maintains them with other bodybuilders in the industry as well. Recently, while speaking with his former pupil Phil Heath, Rambod recalled when Ronnie Coleman reached out to him. Rambod explained how the then-seven-time Mr. Olympia reached out for help in finding a new sponsor.

Coleman’s contract with Weider was ending, and The King wanted to work with a new sponsor. The eight-time Mr. Olympia winner had shortlisted two sponsors. One of them, MuscleTech, had already established itself. However, BSN was the new kid on the block looking to make a slash. So when Rambod got a call from the owners, he worked his magic.

Ronnie Coleman didn’t train under Rambod. The bodybuilding coach was yet to become the legend he is today. However, the champion put his faith in the Pro Creator and wasn’t disappointed. When the BSN owners Scott James and Chris Ferguson called Rambod, they asked for the “best athlete” Rambod knew to join their company. However, the coach didn’t name Coleman at first.

Instead, he ensured that BSN would be ready to pay top dollar to collaborate with Ronnie Coleman. “You can’t afford him,” Rambod told James and Ferguson. “They’re like, ‘try us.'” So Rambod asked them to make an offer worthy of the first man to win the Mr. Olympia and Arnold Classic in the same season. After they made the offer, Rambod called Coleman for approval.

However, Ronnie Coleman was sure the Pro Creator could negotiate on his behalf. “You’ve done this for other guys that I know… You gave them good deals… Can you do it for me?” Coleman asked the bodybuilding coach. So Hany Rambod negotiated and secured a handsome sponsorship deal for The King.

Rambod revealed that although it was a contract between BSN and Coleman, he also signed a fourth signature as the witness to that deal. Years later, BSN sold at a valuation of $150 million, and everyone cashed out. Interestingly, Coleman wasn’t the only bodybuilder BSN wanted.

A bodybuilding super team

After singing Ronnie Coleman, the brand wanted another big name to come on board. So they approached Rambod for advice. Since the coach knew that Jay Cutler was willing to leave MuscleTech, he pitched in Cutler’s name. Getting the two legendary rivals of their time signed onto the same brand would take a mountain of money.

Hence, despite Cutler’s willingness to leave, he renegotiated a better offer with MuscleTech. Although the bodybuilding superteam didn’t happen, Phil Health couldn’t help but wonder about the hype it would’ve generated.
