The seven-time Mr. Olympia, Phil Heath, in a recent revelation, drew parallels between his journey and that of boxing legend Mike Tyson. Reflecting on his recent documentary, “Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story” Heath acknowledged the facade of invincibility he projected, concealing inner turmoil. Despite facing personal demons, he embraced the mantra of relentless pursuit, driven by the desire to be the best.
In an episode of the True Geordie podcast with Brian Davis, he shared Tyson’s struggle with inner demons, resonating with the relentless drive to overcome obstacles. The weight of expectations and the pursuit of greatness often demanded sacrifice and suppression of vulnerabilities. This is where Heath saw similarities between himself and the boxing icon.

According to Heath, amidst the clamor of success, there lingered a yearning for simplicity, a longing for ordinary joys untouched by the demands of fame. He recalled, “I remember watching Mike Tyson talk about the demons and stuff and I’m sitting there it’s like yep I know what that means.”
In his candid admission, he vividly described the internal battle, where the resolute call to action drowned out whispers of doubt. The relentless pursuit of excellence echoed through his confession: “I’m just very glad that I was able to leverage it. Because I can hear those whispers from that damn freaking demon dude like you got to kill these motherfu**r you got to get them”
He acknowledged the challenge of resisting those negative impulses, feeling the urge to act on them while longing for simple joys like spending carefree time with friends or experiencing the freedom of a summer vacation without the burden of responsibilities.
However, he continued on his path, with his determination paying off as he clinched the Olympia title seven times, defeating his greatest rival, Kai Greene, who was an Arnold Classic champion. Earlier, Heath had revealed how Greene played a major part in changing his mindset.
A defeat inspired Heath to push his boundaries
Heath talked about a moment that changed how he looked at bodybuilding forever. He remembered losing to Kai Greene at the Arnold Classic in 2010. This defeat made him determined to improve. Heath wasn’t happy that Greene had also won the previous year’s show. He recalled, “I was up by three points after prejudging, and then I lost by seven at night.”
Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Heath decided to become even better.
“Just become so great that he’ll never stand a chance and you know it was very difficult holding him off,” said Heath. Beating Greene made Heath proud because he knew he had defeated one of the best in bodybuilding.ADVERTISEMENT
