Flex Wheeler started by learning martial arts, and later on switched to?bodybuilding. His nickname was first a derogatory term used by others to make fun of him, but he changed it after becoming a bodybuilding legend. His flexibility and amazing physique became the reason people started calling him Flex Wheeler. Unfortunately, the Iron Man pro champion and the Hall of Famer had to go through a lot of pain due to his legs. He also went through surgery that changed his life forever.

In the NASM-CPT Podcast by Rick Richey, Flex Wheeler spoke about the surgery that changed his life forever. He gave his perspective on the life-changing event and talked about the experience in the podcast.

Flex Wheeler opens up about his surgery and how it helped him

Since it?s a big part of his life, the experience of having surgery and getting amputated came up during the podcast. Richey asked him about the life-changing experience, and what his perspective was after he woke up from the huge surgery and had to deal with the truth.

After suffering from a kidney disease and a transplant, he could not ignore the pain in his legs anymore. The 58-year-old had to go through surgery in 2022 and take the biggest decision of his life of going to amputation. He spoke about the experience and said, ?I?m gonna figure it out. I am just gonna be a poster child for amputees?? The bodybuilding champion did not want his struggle or anyone else struggle to go in vain and said, ?I wanna be a spokesperson.? Wheeler finally said, ?I am using my name for so many global reasons.?

He is using his platform and name to spread awareness about medical conditions and increase medical research about things that are still not talked about. The operation was not easy for the bodybuilding champion and he shared the horrific incident that happened just after surgery.

Flex Wheeler shared his experience of having surgery and not waking up

He has talked about it before on Instagram and while speaking about the surgery that changed his life in 2022, he shared a horrific incident. Flex said,??The surgery was supposed to be a couple of hours. I was supposed to be out for three hours. I ended up being in a coma for over ten days.?

Since he had already gone to a kidney transplant, his kidneys were weak.?Wheeler continued,??My kidney failed, so they were worried because they have to put this dye in me to be able to see where the blood clots are that caused my kidney to fail and I started turning grey from what they told me so the Doctors were like hey, we gotta hurry up and take his leg off or else he?s gonna die.?
