He said that brushing and flossing are good for the teeth, but what people might not know is that limited eating of snacks and chewing sugar-free gum can also improve one’s teeth. According to research, in addition to daily dental hygiene, saliva also plays an important role in keeping gums and teeth healthy because it flushes away bacteria and food particles.
The tooth enamel is strengthened by the saliva, which we might not even notice. He also wrote, “If you’re a big snacker, eating food more often could reduce your mouth’s ability to produce enough protective saliva, which could allow more bacteria to build up in your mouth.” The easiest and most affordable tip he gave was to chew sugar-free gum, because no sugar means no tooth decay. “Scientists studied more than 700,000 people who were age 40 and older. The goal was to identify behaviors associated with better health and lifespan. Three behaviors — a lack of physical activity, opioid use, and smoking — were associated with up to a 45 percent increase in death during the nine years the study took place,” he stated.
