Bodybuilding, a sport that celebrates the epitome of human physicality, has seen various changes and adaptations over the years. One topic that has sparked considerable debate within the bodybuilding community is the existence of the 212 category. Renowned bodybuilder Lee Priest has taken a vocal stance, advocating for the removal of this category from bodybuilding competitions.
The 212 category was introduced to bodybuilding in 2008 as a means of providing a platform for shorter and lighter bodybuilders. Unlike the open weight category, where athletes can weigh over 212 pounds, the 212 division imposes a strict weight limit of 212 pounds (96.2 kg) for competitors. However, this addition is useless according to some bodybuilding veterans like Priest. During an episode of Jujitoine Podcast, Priest expressed his opinions on this category along with IFBB Pro Milos Sarcev.

Lee Priest, a former professional bodybuilder, has been an outspoken critic of the 212 category since its inception. His argument centers around the belief that bodybuilding is a sport that is highly dependent on the athlete’s genetics. If the athlete is not genetically gifted, he/she shall not be given a pro card. Priest stated,?“Stop giving out f*king pro cards, like they are f*king popcorn.”
Continuing further, Lee said,?“I hear people saying, Yeah, but Lee! If we don’t have the 212 these guys wouldn’t have an opportunity to compete as pros. That’s true, but you know why they wouldn’t have an opportunity to compete as pros, because they’re not fucking good enough to be a pro.”?

Giving a piece of advice for the 212 competitors, Priest pointed out, “Be a good amateur. You can be good amateur. There’s lots of guys who don’t even compete and make a lot of money.”?This is not the first time that Lee expressed his views on 212, a few months back,?he revealed the same during a podcast with Rx Muscle.?
Priest’s stance on 212’s removal
Lee Priest explains to Rx Muscle the reason why he wants this change, and said,??Because we?re seeing some of these 212 guys get up there, look Hadi was 212, he won the Olympia. Derek, we?ve seen Shaun Clarida, if he does well in this? yeah Bonac, I say get rid of the 212 class and use that money for the Open, so you can distribute more money in the Open. Get rid of 212, if you?re a good enough bodybuilder, you should be able to stand with the best of the best.?
