It is needless to say Arnold Schwarzenegger has been an influencer even before the time of social media. He not only set trends throughout his professional career but also shows that influence even today. Hence it is a given that fitness enthusiasts from the 80s and late 70s would follow his steps no matter what. However, Tom Platz, the Quadfather took a more scenic route.

Tom Platz confessed how he had to find out what best works for him by not following Arnold blindly but after having a conversation with another pillar of bodybuilding sport, Mike Mentzer. The bodybuilder also talked about the results he got after making changes.

Tom Platz’s Carb Transformation

Platz had confessed outright that like everybody, even he used to believe that everything Arnold did would work out for him as well. He stated, “The low carbs, 0 carbs in the seventies is what Arnold did. Whatever Arnold did we did okay?” However, he soon realized that low carbs were not a thing for him. He recalled, “I did reasonably well on 0 carbs or very low carbs but it wasn’t really working for me.”

Then the bodybuilder told his audience how he met Mike Mentzer and conversations with him made Platz pick up high carbs instead of the lower amounts. He stated, “I decided through many conversations with him I am gonna go on high carbs at the 81′ Olympia. I’m gonna go 300 grams a day, that was huge, coming from 25 a day. And all of a sudden I’m in the gym and I’m like bigger than ever and I’m in better shape than ever.”

Tom Platz knew about the feud between Arnold and Mike quite closely and years later he brought it up again to the audience, reminding them what made Mike Mentzer die.

Tom Platz speculates about Mike’s death

In one of the short clips, Platz was seen talking about how Schwarzenegger had once commented about Mike which made the latter get quite dejected. He stated,  “I remember Arnold said something about Mike’s stomach. Arnold said, ‘Hey you have a fat stomach anyhow.’” Then the bodybuilder also commented, “I think that’s one of the reasons it caused him to die. When you carry bitterness, it’s bad. It’s like cancer. You know probably causes cancer. Your attitude, your negative energy, probably makes your whole body do weird stuff, you know.”
