Ever wondered if stretching can help you increase your muscles and strength in the gym? Recently, seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger shared his evidence-based research that showcased how stretching can help you in the gym. In the latest edition of the Austrian Oak’s newsletter, the Arnold’s Pump Club, he revealed that it is beneficial for everyone to perform this to increase their strength. But is that all? Let’s delve deep and find out.
The latest studies have found that stretching can help you increase your strength and your muscle mass. But there’s a catch to this being true. Researchers examined the participants very closely and found something interesting. A group of participants engaged in the “extreme stretch” with the help of bands that many would call uncomfortable. “Stretching intensity was set to the maximum-tolerated stretching pain,” the researchers revealed.
Schwarzenegger shed light on the fact that “it wasn’t just extreme stretching; the participants had to do it for 15 minutes per day, four times per week.“ This may pop a new question in your head: Can performing a high-intensity stretching session regularly improve performance?

Schwarzenegger thinks that following a high-intensity stretching workout can “possibly” lead you to the desired results. There’s no need to overcomplicate your warm-up routine. According to Arnold Schwarzenegger, lengthy high-intensity stretching sessions offer no significant advantages over a standard gym warm-up. Adhering to your established routine ensures you’re adequately prepared for your workout without superfluous effort. Continuing further, he compared the improvements of extreme stretching with the warmup.
“The improvements were minimal,” said Arnie. Even if you’re deciding to compete or want to push all limits and become the strongest version of yourself, adding the extreme stretching program would be “unnecessary,” according to the Austrian Oak. He still believes in the traditional warm-up approach. Schwarzenegger also shed light on the fact that strength training can help you in other aspects of your life outside the gym.

Strength training can cure sleeping disorders, according to Arnold Schwarzenegger
In the previous edition of the Austrian Oak’s newsletter, he shared that strength training can help you overcome sleeping difficulty. He shared research that had found that lifting weights makes one fall asleep faster and better. “People who lift weights have an easier time falling asleep, have fewer sleep disturbances, wake up less at night, have deeper restorative rest, and tend to sleep longer,” says Arnie.
Schwarzenegger stressed that one should give proper attention to one’s sleeping schedule and resting period in the gym. He further mentioned that this helps reduce health risks. He concluded and said, “Getting enough rest is a top priority because more research continues to link short sleep and low-quality sleep to many health risks, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.“
