The existence of plastics is aplenty in everything that we use in the modern world. However, what’s particularly worrying is the prevalence of microplastics. It’s a real cause for concern, knowing that these pollutants could have serious consequences for our well-being. And seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger has often highlighted these issues, stressing the urgent need for action to tackle this issue head-on.

In the latest edition of his newsletter, Schwarzenegger shed light upon a growing health concern related to microplastics. According to a new study, people with higher levels of microplastics in their blood are “4.5 times more likely to suffer from heart attack, stroke, or death.” This alarming statistic raises critical questions about our everyday exposure to these tiny plastic particles.

Microplastics are everywhere. “Research suggests that we are exposed to tens of thousands of microplastic particles every year,” the newsletter showed. These particles are found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and even the food we eat. While our bodies and immune systems can fight off some of these invaders, the long-term effects of higher exposure remain uncertain.

According to The Terminator, “those with microplastics and nanoparticles in their plaque had a 353 percent higher risk of cardiovascular health issues, even when considering cardiovascular risk factors.” This means that the presence of microplastics in the body might be linked to severe health problems, although the study did not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Scientists are cautious about making definitive claims, but the potential risks are enough to warrant concern.

The takeaway from this research is clear: we need to rethink our use of plastics. Plastics have been a staple in our lives for decades, used in everything from packaging to household items. However, there are many alternatives available. Reducing plastic use can help decrease our exposure to these harmful particles.

Simple actions can make a big difference. The 76-year-old says that “not using plastic cutting boards, not microwaving food in plastic containers, or limiting the use of plastic water bottles,” can definitely have an effect. By making these small changes, you can take control of your exposure to microplastics and potentially reduce health risks. Even earlier, he highlighted the significant impact of drinking water from plastic water bottles.

Drinking from plastic bottles might increase health risks: Arnold Schwarzenegger

While emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated, the Former Mr. Olympia hinted at the potential risks of drinking from plastic bottles. Citing research, Arnie explained that plastic bottles contain more nanoplastics than previously thought.

Research suggests a link between nanoplastics and health issues like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. The Austrian Oak recommends reducing plastic bottle use, opting for glass or stainless steel, and considering home water filters. By doing so, we protect both our health and the environment.

While we wait for more conclusive research, taking these precautionary steps is a practical way to protect ourselves. The presence of microplastics in our environment is a growing concern, but listening to Schwarzenegger’s advice and implying it in our day-to-day lives might reduce the bigger health issues.
