The reigning champion in the Men’s Open Division already has his eyes on the 2024 Mr. Olympia title. However, Derek Lunsford showcased his physical growth and ability on the prestigious stage, which led him to win his first Olympia title in the open category this year. He also showcased the other side of himself, his spirituality. Lunsford opened up about his faith in God and how it has shaped his perspective on success and life gradually.
In a recent YouTube video, Lunsford discussed his thought process and his point of view of God. A young aspiring bodybuilder, Tristyn Lee, who started bodybuilding at 15, shared the video.

Both bodybuilders collaborated for a training session, and while training, they talked about various topics. Soon-to-be father shared his opinion on rest days, saying he does not like resting, instead, emphasized his commitment to giving his best every day. Eventually, their conversation shifted to spirituality.
Derek Lunsford discussed his journey from a self-centered person to recognizing a higher purpose in life, through faith in God. He was so depressed at times he thought of quitting bodybuilding. “I’ve always been a God-fearing man and, like at the time, my relationship with God wasn’t as strong as it is today, but I finally just literally gave up. I threw in the towel and I said God that’s it man I don’t want to be here anymore but if I’m going to be here, show me the way,” quoted Lunsford.
Enthusiastically, he showed his gratitude and credits to God for pulling him out of despair, opening doors, and achieving success. He wants to use his social media platforms to spread positivity and share the transformative story of his life and the power of faith. According to him, God helped him to overcome challenges. Before the Olympia, he shared a post on his Instagram showcasing his faith in God.

He said in his Instagram post and emphasized to believe in god’s plan, “If we don’t get what we want. It’s not because god doesn’t want to bless us it’s because he’s protecting us from something that we can’t see.” This perspective shows his gratitude towards life, which is loaded with a passion for bodybuilding.
He tried to help others with a clear message that shows we should appreciate the things we have, the opportunity, and the ability to accomplish goals. And if someone didn’t achieve what they dreamt of, it was also God’s divine plan. One has to simply trust the process.
