The NBA Commissioner Adam Silver sat down with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s First Take to discuss the future of the NBA and the WNBA. He expressed his delight at this development, stating that while they are in a “great” position given the attendance, the growth for the league will come from other aspects. The WNBA has been amid its most-watched Finals in two decades. Despite facing adversity in terms of building a sustainable business in the past, Silver acknowledged that this was part of the process. He stated, “There was always an understanding that this is going to take time to build and you can’t create these kinds of traditions and leagues not only overnight, but you have to take a long-term view.”
“As the WNBA continues to prosper, as well as women’s college basketball, you see a larger pool of great female athletes turning to this sport.”

Talking further with Stephen A. Smith, Adam Silver also addressed the Player Participation Policy, which will penalize teams for violating resting rules. Moving on to the significance of the WNBA, Silver said, “You’re seeing as the WNBA continues to prosper as well as women’s college basketball you see a larger pool of great female athletes turning to this sport. Women are choosing to play basketball because they see there’s a professional career down the road.” He also discussed how the league is striving to take advantage of all the different ways to enhance the experience of consumers.
Women’s Basketball: On a run to outgrow challenges
The road for the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is not flared with flowers. Despite making significant strides in recent years, it still faces several challenges. Currently, WNBA players receive about 20% of league revenues, compared to their NBA counterparts who get about 50%. This pay disparity has recently seen many vocals from several WNBA stars.
With the pay issue being on the one side, another challenge that requires awareness is the lack of interest from women. Women’s basketball needs more women viewers to watch and engage just as the NBA. It’s also vital to televise it to reach a broader fanbase. The league’s best teams aren’t showcased like they should be, to market said product. Despite these challenges, the WNBA continues to grow and evolve, presenting opportunities for even greater success in the future.
