In NASCAR, it isn’t uncommon for teams to recruit drivers on a one-off basis. And the BJ McLeod Motorsports team followed that practice by roping in Andy Lally. The 46-year-old is best known for dabbling into different fields of racing, like sports cars, endurance racing and NASCAR.
During his NASCAR stint, he primarily raced in the Cup and Xfinity Series. However, he largely concentrates on the Xfinity Series, where he has racked up multiple fifth-place finishes – at Mid-Ohio, Daytona road course, and Road America. Coincidentally, all of these tracks are road courses and not speedways.
I’ll be racing Indianapolis with @TeamBJMcLeod in their #78 in the @NASCAR_Xfinity series. I need a throw back idea and most importantly a sponsor! Im thinkin we can shape that 78 into a 28 font and run a Davey Allison rookie paint scheme… whadaya think?? #NASCAR

In 2021, Andy Lally is splitting time between Our Motorsports and BJ McLeod Motorsports. With the former, he recorded 18th and fifth place finishes in the #23 car, though he never qualified in the #03 car. On the other side of the fence, he finished 31st in the #99 car and 13th in the #5 car.

This weekend, the NASCAR Cup, Truck, and Xfinity Series drivers are racing at Watkins Glen. However, everyone will later split up the following weekend, with the Cup and Xfinity grids heading to Indianapolis. Over there, the 46-year-old will drive the #78 car for the first time and will hope to improve on his performance.
Coming to the team itself, the outfit has turned in relatively mediocre results. To be precise, Lally’s 13th place is the 10th time the team broke into the Top 20 this year.

On a brighter note, Kevin Harvick managed a career-best fourth-place finish for the team at the Circuit of the Americas. That was just one of two appearances that he has made for the team, though both were in different cars. Nevertheless, he managed to finish in the Top 10 on both occasions, with a 6th place at Road America.
