Big Bash League (BBL) have recently announced that the controversial boundary rule will not be used in this year’s BBL in the final if the game ended up in a tie. The rule helped England to win their maiden 50-over World Cup title this year.

On Tuesday, Cricket Australia (CA) changed the tournament regulations to avoid a repetition of this year’s controversial boundary rule in the World Cup final. England were announced as the champions on the back of their superior boundary count against New Zealand after the game and the Super Over both ended in a tie. England had scored 26 boundaries whereas New Zealand hit 17 in the final and England were thus named as champions.

However, according to the new rules made by CA for Big Bash Leagues is, if two teams are tied at the end of a final and then again the Super Over also ended in a tie, the Super Overs will be continued to play until there is a clear winner. The rule will be applied for all the matches in the finals series. On the other hand, a tied Super Over in a normal season game will see the points split between the two teams.

However, the new playing conditions will allow for an “unlimited amount” of Super Overs in the finals, but where there are “unavoidable time restraints”. Meanwhile, CA will limit the number of available Super Overs depending on the venues, regulations and broadcast constraints.

Alistair Dobson, CA’s Head of Big Bash Leagues expected the new rule would excite the fans, giving the example of Sydney Sixers’ thrilling Super-Over semi-final win over the Melbourne Renegades last year.

“We hope that allowing for multiple Super Overs in WBBL and BBL Finals will provide our teams and fans with the best possible experience,” Alistair Dobson was quoted as saying by the official BBL website.
