Davis Cup: Belgium set to clash with Argentina

Belgium and Argentina have sealed their semifinal spot in the World Group of Davis Cup.

Belgium took an unassailable 3-0 lead over Canada after Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans beat Daniel Nestor and Adil Shamasdin 7-5, 3-5, 6-4, 6-3 in two and a half hours.

Belgium is all set to take on Argentina which defeated Serbia, with a similar scoreline of 3-0. Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer defeated Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 to take the South American nation through.

Serbia was without its star and World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who opted out in order to rest, after his triumph at Wimbledon. At Queen’s Club, the Murrays ensured that Great Britain inches closer to the semifinals for the first time in 34 years, after the brothers, Andy and Jamie Murray beat Nicolas Mahut and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-1 to hand the host nation a 2-1 lead over the France.

“We played an unbelievably high level-match against a top team in a great atmosphere. To represent your country with your brother and to win a match like this is unbelievable,” said the World No. 3 Andy Murray.

Meanwhile, Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth kept the Australia in hunt after winning 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2 in a match against Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov to make it 1-2 in the tie. Today, both of them won their Singles matches to pull off an incredible comeback to send Australia into the semis. Groth beat Kukushkin 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(6) and later veteran Hewitt defeated Nedovyesov 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-3 to seal the remarkable comeback.

For the first time in 76 years, Australia managed to win a tie after being 0-2 down. They will take on the winner of the quarter final between Great Britain and France in the World Group semifinals in September.

“I love the backs to the wall situation and we had to rally together to get the win,” Hewitt said after the match.

“You don’t get opportunities like this very often. This is what dreams are made of.” he added.
