The performance put up by Nathan Chen during the free program competition was beautiful. There are a few figure skaters who can be as graceful as he is. His jumps, movements, flexibility, and rotations are a treat to watch for both hardcore and casual fans.

He scored a sensational victory to put himself beside American figure skating greats such as Scott Hamilton and Brian Boitano. He won his first gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics to put in a stunning performance.

Thus, he becomes the seventh American to land an Olympic podium finish, to the delight of the fans. The last time an American got on the podium was Evan Lysacek at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Nathan Chen makes history

After a disappointing showing at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics where he won the bronze medal, he gathered pace after that. He scored a 113.97 for the short program, breaking Yuzuru Hanyu’s world record.

Thus, from that moment, he looked like he would win the competition. By putting up a score of 218.63 and coming up with a combined score of 332.60, he dominated the competition from start to finish. Hence, Chen finally sits amongst illustrious company.

Known as the quad king, his quadruple jumps were perfect on the ice rink. Fans in attendance stood in awe of the marvelous performance he showcased during the Olympics. Hence, Chen joins his American counterparts in becoming an icon in figure skating. Likewise, he made all the technical elements look so easy as he received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The focus he had on this year’s competition was something else. He did not appear for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in fear of the pandemic that spread. With all the preparations complete, Chen wanted every single aspect of this competition to be perfect. All that focus came to fruition in his performance. The Japanese duo of Yuma Kagiyama and Shoma Uno finished second and third, respectively.

Thus, Chen reached the promised land. The road to redemption has not been straightforward. With all the frustrations at Pyeongchang forgotten, he is back with a bang for this year’s Beijing Winter Olympics. Bow down to the new champion, Nathan Chen.
