Nina O’Brien gives fans her injury update

Fans and other athletes stood in shock at the injury and it was one of the most devastating crashes in the competition. Time and time again, athletes fell to the ground. The Alpine skiing competitions will see athletes travel at the speed of around 45 miles per hour. Hence, with the use of their legs, they maneuver themselves beside those ‘gates’, which helps them to moderate their speeds. But misjudging a gate can cause serious injuries, just like O’Brien suffered on her day.

“I keep replaying it in my head, wishing I?d skied those last few gates differently. But here we are. I had surgery last night to stabilize my tibia, which unfortunately was an open fracture through my leg. I?ll get the rest fixed at home, but for now I?m in great hands. I want to say thank you to everyone who?s taken care of me, especially those who rushed to me in the finish and my doctors and nurses in Yanqing,” said O’Brien.
