One of those legends from the USA is John Shuster. He led Team USA to their first-ever curling gold medal during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. With most people having a little knowledge of the sport, we go into the finer details of the basic rules of curling, ahead of those years Winter Games.
What is curling and how do you score points?
The basic rules of the sport include two teams who fight with each other for supremacy. On a blank sheet of ice, team members flow heavy granite stones through the ice to reach their intended target. There are four concentric circles in which the first team to get the maximum stones to the center circle wins.
These stones are very heavy as their release is important for people to judge and land their stones in the center circle. In a match, there are ten games that play against each other, with one game being called an end. A total of eight stones for each team are left from the curler’s hand to land on the spot. In the end, the stones which are close to the circles get the points.
Likewise, there are times when two stones land closer to the center circle, as the team will have two points. Significantly, a lot of factors are important while having a curling competition. The release of the stone, team members who brush the ice in front of the stone to reduce friction, all of these minor elements matter. Hence, the sport needs a substantial amount of creativity and planning and is similar to playing chess with team members targeting the opposition stones to get an advantage.
Team USA to win again at Winter Olympics?
At the end of ten games, the team with the highest number of points wins the match. If the scores are tied, the players play an extra end to determine the winner. Thus, curling is one of the most interesting sports in the world. In addition, strategy and teamwork are important for people to win matches in curling.
