Shaquille O’Neal built a name for himself while in the NBA, retiring with four NBA titles and 15 All-Star selections. It is safe to say the NBA icon is not just successful on the court. He is now a business and investor, his wealth extending beyond his basketball earnings.

Having said that, O’Neal is decided on how he wants his children to grow up. The retired NBA legend wants them to learn – and become successful and earn well on their own. In an appearance on the “Earn Your Leisure” podcast, O’Neal discusses his kids and the way he parents in detail.

What did Shaquille O’Neal say to his children about the money he has earned?

During the podcast, O’Neal speaks about the wealth he has earned – and what that has to do with motivating his children.

“My kids are older now. They kinda upset with me. Not really upset, but they don’t understand… I tell them all the time,” O’Neal said. “We a’int rich. I’m rich”.

While his words might sound harsh, it is the 49-year-old’s way to motivate his children so they could work hard. He wants them to grow on their own, and not solely rely on the money he has earned. Fans seemed to discuss the same on Twitter, some agreeing with O’Neal.


“There’s one rule: education. I don’t care if you play basketball. I don’t care about none of that,” he added. “Listen, I got six kids. I would like a doctor, somebody to own a hedge fund, a pharmacist, a lawyer, someone that owns multiple businesses, someone to take over my business”. However, he will not be handing it over to them but wants them to earn it instead.

While he is retired, the Lakers icon’s yearly income seems to be $60 million. He is tied up with companies like Genius Brands International, Reebok, and Pepsi.
