Scottie Pippen does not solely blame Michael Jordan for the narrative that only put Michael in the spotlight. It was also the fault of the media who started making the game about individual greatness. Many NBA fans know about the Celtics domination era followed by the Lakers domination era.
However, neither of those time periods are known for individually talented players. The Lakers had Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Magic Johnson while the Celtics had Bill Russell and Larry Bird, among others. We individually put neither of these players under the microscope because they were all great teammates besides being dominant players.
However, in NBA especially, Michael Jordan was one of the first individual greats to be picked out of a team sport by the American media. And Scottie Pippen often referred to them as Michael’s “Cheerleaders”. He pointed out this harsh truth that the media seems to have forgotten.

In an interview with GQSports, about the media, he said, “Well, I think they’re all having to face the music. I think reality has set in on them. When you look back, and you look back at how great our league is, it’s about great teams. It’s not about any great individual and you glorify teams. You don’t glorify individuals.”
Further, he added, “Now, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, they don’t play on teams. You can glorify them for their individual performance, their individual achievement, because they did it alone on the court. But, deep down inside of them, they know they didn’t do it alone. You know? It was somebody there hitting the ball back across to Serena. It was somebody there for Tiger, carrying his bag… Sports is built around team success.”
