Kobe Bryant Proved He’s Not A “Bubblegum Player” Against Michael Jordan In The NBA All-Star Game

Before Kobe Bryant won three titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, he was coming off the bench while playing a limited number of minutes. His popularity, though, was already on the rise. This became evident during the 1998 NBA All-Star game, where Bryant was the unexpected Western Conference starter.

While at the game, Bryant stood beside already established NBA icons. Of course, Michael Jordan, who was also Bryant’s idol, was one of them.

During an old interview, the five-time NBA champion discussed his selection and the challenge of playing against Jordan.

“It was a huge honor,” Bryant said. He added that when the votes were being tallied, he realized he would be a starter. Because back then, Bryant did not even start for the Lakers.

Additionally, he wanted to prove that this opportunity was serious, and he was not just another ‘bubblegum player’. Even though he made it to the All-Star game based on his popularity, Bryant wanted to play and show everyone that he can hoop.

“You know, the hype of going up against Mike – it was, ‘Okay, let’s go, show me.'” Bryant said. “Like, ‘I’ve been watching you play my whole life. Show me. I want to see this. Everybody calling you Black Jesus and all this other crap like you’re going to show me, man.'”

Bryant faced Jordan without backing down and eventually earned his respect, before being called out by George in the 4th quarter.

Having said that, Bryant scored team-high 18 points, while Jordan posted game-high 23 points.

Bryant and Jordan’s friendship

Though Jordan and Bryant started out as two players on the court, their friendship evolved over time. However, before they became close, Bryant used to pester Jordan. As per Bryant’s trainer Tim Grover, the Lakers legend would always wait for Jordan to leave.

While many stars came up to Jordan, Grover pointed out that Bryant ended up matching the intensity. Eventually, their bond improved.

Their friendship only grew stronger after Bryant’s retirement, and Jordan even gave the eulogy at the Staples Center. Over the years, the six-time NBA Champion came to see Bryant as a little brother.
