The downfall of FC Barcelona is a shock to every soccer fan out there. While the departure of Lionel Messi disappointed many Barca fans, the departure of Ronald Koeman from the club would come as great news.

The club sacked their manager after a recent run of poor results, which included four losses in six games. Hence, the torrid time between the club and the manager ended. However, there seems to be a problem with the sacking of Koeman. Already in debt, Barcelona would have to pay an extraordinary amount because of terminating his contract.

Ronald Koeman will get an interesting sum

With Barcelona currently sitting at No.9 on the table, Koeman’s job has been in jeopardy for some time. Hence, the club sacking their manager did not come as a shock. However, the real catch would be the exorbitant sum of money that he gets.

According to his contract, which expires on June 2022, Barcelona would have to pay him 14 million euros as he is sacked right now. Moreover, they may have to pay an extra sum of six million euros as his contract was not extended.

Although the deal sounds very skeptical, former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu inserted this clause as he negotiated a deal with Koeman.

During the appointment of Koeman, he had to pay an amount to the Royal Dutch Football Association to terminate his contract. Hence, to cover these expenses, the clause got inserted to incur losses made by Koeman. It certainly is a puzzling decision for the club to offer a clause like this.

Barcelona is in real trouble!

With the financial problems at the club and the sacking of Koeman, hiring a new manager won’t be easy. As of right now, former club legend Xavi is the frontrunner for this job. But, the salary negotiations would be key for a manager to come in.

The financial struggles of the club are unreal. They are in a debt of approximately $1.57 billion. Moreover, the club is looking to sell a $58.1 million stake in Barca studios to improve their finances. They incurred losses up to $558.9 million in the 2020/2021 financial year.

Hence, appointing a manager would be a mammoth task for the club. Surely, the likes of Antonio Conte and Roberto Martinez would cost a lot for the club. The coming days would be interesting to see as Barcelona hopes to find a beacon of shining light for their current troubles.
