Former world number one Serena Williams has announced her withdrawal from next week’s WTA tournament in Montreal. The American cited “personal reasons,” for her inability to participate.

With Williams’ withdrawal, Germany’s Tatjana Maria will take her place to face France’s Alize Cornet in the first round.

The 36-year old bounced back from surgery after giving birth to daughter Olympia in September. She managed to reach the final at Wimbledon, but was beaten by Germany’s Angelique Kerber.

On Tuesday, Williams was soundly beaten by British player Johanna Konta 6-1, 6-0 in San Jose, California.

“I have so many things on my mind that I don’t have time to be shocked about a loss where I clearly wasn’t at my best,” Williams said.

Another player who will be missing next week will be Andy Murray. He was set to begin his comeback in June but his body had other ideas. During his career, Murray has pushed himself to the limit physically. It paid off in the form of three grand slam titles, two gold medals, Davis Cup, the No 1 ranking and a total of 45 titles.

However, it has taken its toll on the 31-year old Briton. Following a hip surgery in January, Murray knows that understanding his limits is more important than ever. He pulled out of the Washington Open, before his quarterfinal match. Murray also opted to pull out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The former world number one is aware that three-hour matches is better suited for a younger man. Unfortunately, Murray does not have a Roger Federer-style serve or a Rafael Nadal forehand to fall back on. Instead, he has to rely on an all-round game backed up by athleticism.

What Murray will never lack is heart. Having begun Washington as the world No 832, his efforts have already taken him up to 375. If there is a way back to the top, there can be no doubt that he has the will.
