Russian ace Daniil Medvedev has forged a 20 match win streak, which sees him in the Australian Open 2021 final. This has already helped him jump past Dominic Thiem to become the World No.3, but now he is agonizingly close to World No.2 Rafael Nadal too.

The rankings will be updated on Monday and right now Medvedev is ranked fourth with 8715 points.

Medvedev had reached the fourth round of Australian Open 2020, thus already has 180 points. And now with him reaching the final of Australian Open 2021, he will get 1020 points. This is enough for him to become World No.3, but not enough to surpass Nadal. So for Medvedev to become the World No.2, he will have to beat Novak Djokovic and become the Australian Open champion.

Medvedev will win 1820 points if he wins the Aussie Open, thus taking his ranking total to 10535. Nadal‘s ranking points currently stand at 9850, thus Medvedev will cross Nadal if he wins his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

But beating Novak Djokovic will be tough for Daniil. Djokovic is unbeaten in all eight finals he has played in Melbourne and he is well suited to the courts at Melbourne Park.

How and where did Daniil Medvedev achieve his 20-match win streak?

Daniil Medvedev’s 20 match win streak started back in Rolex Paris Masters. He won the tournament, defeating Alexander Zverev in the final. Then he came to the ATP Finals, where he became an undefeated champion. Thus, from these last tournaments in 2020, he’s earned 2500 points.

In 2021, he led Russia to the ATP Cup triumph and earned 500 points. With all this, Medvedev has been closing the gap between the top 3 players and the others.

Medvedev is already on a 20 match win streak and since last year he has won all of his 12 matches against top 10 players. Since November, Medvedev has beaten every top 10 player except Roger Federer.

A blockbuster clash with Djokovic is expected, and Medvedev seems to be the best candidate to break Djokovic’s monopoly at the Australian Open.
